主题:First Mover Advantage versus Price Advantage
摘要:The present research of the OSS (Open-Source Software) focuses mainly on three topics: incentive mechanism, policy intervention and market competition. Based on the existing literature, this paper focuses on the market competition part and considers the case where PS (Proprietary Software) has a first mover advantage while OSS has a price advantage. A theoretical model is established to describe the story of market competition between the PS and the OSS under the assumption of existence of network effect. In the Model we analyze how the market structure changes with the degree of network effect when the OSS comes into a market monopolized by the PS.

主题:Workers’ Social Networks and Managerial Ideologies: Improving Labor Standards in China
摘要:This article examines the implementation and enforcement of global labor standards in China. Using a unique survey of firms and their workers in Guangdong Province, this article specifies four findings: 1) managerial ideologies measured by founders‘ college education and managers‘ initiatives in establishing unions are positively related to firms‘ compliance with labor standards; 2) the unique native place networks among Chinese workers are important in preventing labor abuse; 3) despite the ever-increasing regulatory efforts, exploitative labor relations still exist as approximately 20 percent of surveyed workers reported the experience of forced labor and physical abuse, and only 28 percent of surveyed firms paid above minimum wage; and 4) state and private regulatory efforts have achieved limited improvements in labor standards.

主题:Processing Trade, Tariff Reductions, and Firm Productivity: Evidence from Chinese Products
摘要:This paper explores how reductions in tariffs on imported inputs and final goods affect firm productivity by exploiting the special tariff treatment that processing firms apply on imported inputs as opposed to those of non-processing firms. Highly disaggregated Chinese transaction-level trade data and firm-level production data from 2000 to 2006 are used to construct firm-level input and output tariffs. Careful examination of the extent of firm engagement in processing trade and in controlling for various sources of endogeneity reveal that less productive firms choose to engage in processing trade. More importantly, unlike previous findings, reductions in output tariffs have a greater effect on productivity improvement compared with reductions in input tariffs due, in large part, to the fact that processing trade in China enjoys zero tariffs on imported inputs.
