确实跟学科有关系，下面是截取的维基百科上的一段话，里面提到数学或者工程领域有时就是直接按照字母顺序排名的：

Although listing authors in order of the involvement in the project seems straightforward, it often leads to conflict. A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that more than two-thirds of 919 corresponding authors disagreed with their coauthors regarding contributions of each author.[31]

第一作者对该论文的贡献固然优于通讯作者，但有些情况下，通讯作者的作用在晋升和课题申请时，可能会更重要。
1. 比如国外有些大学在职称晋升中，不仅要看自己的科研产出，还要看对培养科研团队和科研新秀的贡献。此时，很多申请教授的人将自己的论文列出，那些自己是第一作者，那些是自己指导研究生和培养团队其他成员的论文。
2.有些科研基金的目的之一是培养新的研究人员和研究生。申请这些科研的教授会在自己的简历中表明自己第一作者的论文多少，指导研究生和其他被训练人员的论文多少。
总之，根据不同情况，其作用也不同。作为导师，指导更多的研究生做科研并发表论文，在同行眼里，有时会更受敬仰。

经济金融领域的国际期刊，一般都按照姓氏排名。

物理学里的一段公案：杨振宁非得要把名字排在李政道前面，把李搞得很不爽，而按当时惯例一般是按姓氏字母顺序排名。

通讯作者一般代表着该作者对该文章有最终的所有权和解释权
