田国强是教育部首批人文社会科学长江学者讲座教授，中组部首批“千人计划”入选者及评审专家。目前兼任上海市人民政府特聘决策咨询专家，香港科技大学、华中科技大学等大学兼职教授，南京财经大学名誉教授，《中国经济评论》等的共同主编和《中国研究评论》等的编委。在国际英文知名学术刊物上发文近百篇，在中文学术刊物上发文四十余篇，包括在经济学权威期刊《经济研究》上发文9篇。
在对1990-2000年全球著名1000名经济学家的论文发表和论文引用次数排名中，田国强分别位居华人经济学家中第4位与第6位。2006年被《华尔街电讯》列为中国大陆十大最具影响力的经济学家之一。
其研究领域涉及经济机制设计理论、动态经济学和一般均衡理论。他提出了一个在“非规范性”的经济环境中，即有限经济自由和不完全市场体系环境下的企业产权理论。
教育经历
1971—1972年的教育回潮中，他得以在高中学到一些知识。
1974年高中毕业，当时毕业后有两种选择，一种是进工厂，但不可能上大学，另外一种是下乡，可能被推荐上大学。田国强当时的愿望是上大学，因此选择了下乡。
1976年秋考入华中工学院。
1982年获华中工学院（现华中科技大学）数学硕士学位，
1983年1月底，田国强成为明尼苏达大学经济系有史以来第一个来自中国大陆的博士生。
1987年5月，田国强的博士论文获得答辩委员会的一致同意，拿到博士学位。
