<P><B>Abstract:</B> The dataset is created from a firm-level survey conducted by World Bank in 2001. The survey covers 1,500 Chinese firms, which are evenly distributed across five big cities: <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 /><st1:City w:st="on">Beijing</st1:City>, <st1:City w:st="on">Chengdu</st1:City>, <st1:City w:st="on">Guangzhou</st1:City>, <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Shanghai</st1:City></st1:place> and Tianjing. The sample firms are drawn within ten sectors, of which five are manufacturing sectors including apparel and leather goods, consumer goods, electronic components, electronic equipment and vehicles and vehicle parts and the other five are service sectors including accounting and related services, advertising and marketing, business logistics, communication services and information technology services. The chosen five manufacturing sectors reflect <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:country-region w:st="on">China</st1:country-region></st1:place>'s current or potential competitive strengths. The survey is based on a two-part questionnaire. The first part is to be completed by accountants to acquire the firm's basic profile such as the ownership, revenues, costs and labor force. The second part is designed for face-to-face interview with senior managers to obtain the firm's information on competition, innovation and external relationships with clients, supplies, government and research institutions. Most accounting data cover 3-year period of 1998-2000, while most interview data are only for the year of 2000.</P>
