LaRue Hosmeris a mechanical engineer who, in 1955, foundedcompany to build waste-reduction equipment for sawmills
and paper mills. The company was sold in 1968, and Professor Hosmer returned to the academic community and received a
PhD in Corporate Strategy and the Economics ofCompetition in 1971. He has taught at the University of Michigan ever since,
with visiting appointments at Stanford , Yale, Virginia, the Naval Post Graduate School, and Alabama. His interest in ethics
dates from experiences while running the machinery company, and he offered the first course in ethics of management at the
Michigan Business School in 1984. He currently is emeritus.
