Macroeconomicestimates of the effect unionization on income inequality, discussed, forexample in the second half of Card, Lemieux and Riddell [2003] , suggest that a significant part of the increase in wage inequalityamong U.S. males over the thirtyyears leading up to 2000 could be attributed to the decline of unionization inthe private sector.

Using the theorydeveloped in the book Labour Market Economics by Benjamin, Gunderson, Lemieux, Riddell（只有课件）,explain how this result is possible and what it suggests about how unionsoperate in practice.
