MARTIN RAVALLION is Director of the Development Research Group of theWorld Bank. He has held various positions in the Bank, since he joinedas an Economist in 1988. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from the LondonSchool of Economics, and has taught economics at L.S.E., OxfordUniversity, the Australian National University, and PrincetonUniversity. His main research interests over the last 25 years haveconcerned poverty and policies for fighting it.

SHAOHUA CHEN is a Senior Statistician in the Development EconomicsResearch Group of the World Bank. She manages the Global Povertydatabase and all developing countries’ poverty, inequality estimationsat the World Bank since 1991. Her research has focused on poverty andinequality measurement, and program/policy impacts evaluation.

Before joining the World Bank, she was the lecturer of business schoolof Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China. She receivedher Master's Degree in Statistical Computing from American University.

Previously taught at Sydney University and University of New England,his research expertise includes poverty and inequality decomposition,applied econometric modeling, rural development and TFP analysis. Anhonorary Professor of several leading universities in China includingFudan University and Sichuan University, he has published several booksand over 60 articles in referred international journals.
