Various genres to which the poem belongs (romance, epic, vision) are indicated, and special attention is given to its place within the encyclopedic tradition.The poem is then situated historically through an overview of Dante's early poetic and political careers and the circumstances that led to his exile.Professor Mazzotta concludes by discussing the central role Dante's exile was to play in his poetic project.

Overview:
Professor Kleiner introduces thewide variety of Roman buildings covered in the course and links them with thetheme of Roman urbanism. The lecture ranges from early Roman stone constructionto such masterpieces of Roman concrete architecture as the Colosseum andPantheon. Traveling from Rome and Pompeii across the vast Roman Empire,Professor Kleiner stops in such locales as North Africa and Jordan to explorethe plans of cities and their individual edifices: temples, basilicas,theaters, amphitheaters, bath complexes, and tombs. The lecture culminates withreference to the impact of Roman architecture on post-antique architecturaldesign and building practice.
