  Your critique should show that you can
  1) understand, analyze and evaluate the reported research work
  2) recognize the writers’ arguments
  3) engage in critical thinking and writing.
  
  Keep questions like these in mind as you read, make notes, and then write the critique.
  
  Content
  
  1. What is the specific topic of the article? What overall purpose does it seem to have? Are they clearly presented? (Look in the Abstract, Introduction, and end of Literature Review).
  
  
  2. Do the authors clearly state an explicit thesis? Do the authors have a specific point of view? How do the authors develop the argumentation? Is the article “persuasive”? Try to find evidence and explain.
  
  
  3. What exactly does the work contribute and relate to the field? What are the gaps it attempts to fill in? Can you see any significance or implications of this study?
  
  
  4. What are the specific research questions? Are they clearly articulated? How was the study conducted? How were data collected and analyzed? Is any important information missing? Have the authors considered any reliability and validity issues? How? And other problems?
  
  
  5. What are the major findings from the study? How did the authors interpret the findings? Are their claims convincingly substantiated by evidence drawn from this study?
  
  6. Do the authors acknowledge the major limitations? What topics for further discussion does the work raise? What are their original contributions to the field? Are they clearly stated?
  
  Organization
  
  1. Is article well organized and clearly written? Does it include all major sections?
  2. Does it start with an effective Introduction? Does it include all the information that readers may expect?
  3. Does it tactfully use signposting devices to organize ideas and writing? Does each paragraph have a clear structure?
  4. Does it end with a well-written Conclusion?
  
  Use of academic language
  
  1. Is the writing appropriate to academic style? Any inappropriate register/ vocabulary use (reporting verbs, hedging devices, formal grammar, sentence structure, etc.)?
  2. Are there any errors in grammar, verb tense, lexical usages or punctuation?
