  Tesco Plc had been considering a proposal for setting up a big superstore in St Albans for quite some time. The proposal however attracted opposition of certain local groups and eventually Tesco did not go ahead with the investment proposal.
  
  Imagine your role as a trainee accountant in the finance office of Tesco who had been dealing with this proposed project. You have been asked to write a report to be used as a case study in financial management course of a university.
  
  Required
  
  Using your knowledge of accounting and finance produce the desired report after considering the following points.
  
  You will need to carry out a small scale research based on secondary data e.g. published articles, media reports, company reports and internet resources to analyse the investment situation and what advantages and disadvantages could have resulted had the project been implemented. Your report must address the following:
  
  1. In order to screen and assess the investment proposal which decision making tools you think would be most appropriate in this scenario? You need to mention and discuss briefly at least three relevant tools. (20 marks)
  
  2. What kind of information the finance manager must have collected before using those decision making tools? Let us assume that £20 million is the initial cost with net positive cash flow of £4 million per year after the store is operational with a cost of capital of 10%. Demonstrate how the decision making tools would have been used using those figures and what more information would be needed. (20 marks)
  
  3. What would have been the limitations of those methods? (10 marks)
  
  4. What non-financial qualitative factors must have been instrumental in arriving at the final decision? (20 marks)
  
  5. Discuss what would have been the role of budgeting officer and what impact the project would have on annual budget? (20 marks)
  
  You should use Harvard Referencing style. Good presentation and referencing would carry 10 marks.
  
  
  
  You should add a 300-500 words reflection note as an appendix answering:
  
  1. What were the challenges posed by this coursework?
  
  2. How did you deal with those challenges?
  
  3. What research and analysis skills did you learn from the exercise?
