On the basis that the deficit is scarcely possible to be reduced to the breakeven point, maybe the downgrade of the U.S. credit rating is a good news for investors, also part of the reason why the demand kept surging in expectation of a credit-rating cut. Thus, investors can get more yields in hold of Treasuries.

FT said several days ago that if US is downgraded, its grade will be the new AAA. Dollar and US bonds will face the impact as implicit government guarantee falls. And equities, the financials in particular, will also suffer as the financing cost increases. More important, the downgrade has a big sentiment effect on the already difficult soveriegn debt environment. Further downgrades are likely for European countries.

There is no doubt that spending cuts agreed on by the lawmakers won't enough to reduce record deficits. Nevertheless, the fist ever downgrade of American's credit rating really reflect the wide public concern for its economic prospect. In my view, the raising of borrowing costs is only one aspect of the problem,  more attention should be paid to people's expectation. Due to the fact that there is no immediate solutions for economic revival, so nothing is more important than hope and confidence.
