Unit 5 Make a business trip itinerary
Starting up
About the unit
In business, we often need to arrange business trips for clients. In order to make their trip pleasant,
we should design a satisfactory itinerary based on our clients’ needs and preferences. This unit
presents the basic elements of an itinerary, and offers some itinerary samples and strategies for
making an itinerary. After completing this unit, Ss will develop their skills in making a business trip
itinerary.
Teaching objectives
When teaching this unit, the T should enable Ss to
note down specific information about a business trip, including dates, places and events (Set
the task & Prepare for the task);
list two to three key points they need to consider when making a business trip itinerary
(Develop the strategies);
make a business trip itinerary (Fulfil the task & To extend).
Teaching suggestions
The T can present this unit in different ways. A product-oriented approach is suggested. With this
approach, the T can guide Ss through the output task by showing them how to collect relevant
information and make a satisfactory itinerary using the appropriate writing strategies.
Motivating
Ask Ss to imagine they have been asked to make an itinerary for a client. Ask Ss what they would
want to know before they started the task.
Enabling
Scenario
Introduce “Scenario” and help Ss to get background information about the task, e.g. people’s
identities, information about the companies, and the event, etc.
Ask Ss to discuss in pairs what preparations they would need to make before writing the
itinerary.
Explain the language tip.
Set the task
Ask Ss to listen to the conversation and ask them what the task is for LiYue.
Listen again and get Ss to finish the tasks in “Understand the text”.
Explain the vocabulary.
