Course description:
The coursebook is organized in seven chapters. The first chapter introduces the general form of optimization problems and then concentrates on singlevariable, unconstrained optimization problems. Chapter 2 presents the generalization of the theory presented in Chap. 1 to the case of multivariable unconstrained optimization. Chapter 3 introduces the constrained, nonlinear optimization with both equality and inequality constraints. Chapter 4 presents the simplex methodology for solving linear programming problems. Chapter 5 ntroduces the modeling of decisions and logical conditions which gives rise to mixed-integer programming problems and introduces the Branch and Bound algorithm for solving complex problems. In Chap. 6, the GAMS® software is introduced through some interesting recreational applications. Chapter 7 includes several classical and interesting case studies from chemical and bio-chemical engineering.
