ADBI/NSFC Conference on
Escaping the Middle Income Trap: Urbanization, StructuralChange and Sustainable Development in Asia
Nov. 27-28, 2015, Tokyo, Japan
After the World War II, only about 10 economies escaped themiddle-income trap, including East Asian economies of Japan, Korea, Taibei, Chinaand Singapore. They achieved high growth for a sufficient period to reach highincome status through well-managed urbanization, smooth structural change, technologicalprogress and so on. Whether other Asian economies, particularly the People’sRepublic of China, can follow suit appeals for both theoretical and empiricalresearch.
Against the above background, the Asian Development BankInstitute (ADBI) and the Natural Science Foundation of China Key Project (NSFC 71133004)solicit submissions of unpublished papers which address any aspect of middleincome trap issue in Asia. The following list is for references only:
1. Lessons and experiences based on East Asian model of urbanization,structural change and sustainable development;
2. Country case studies on the prospect of escaping themiddle income trap;
3. Major social and economic effects of urbanization andstructural change in Asia;
4. The role of government in managing urbanization andstructural change, particularly at different development stages;
5. What are the major challenges for Asian economies toescape the middle-income trap?
6. Other relevant issues.
Selected papers will be published in a book. Theorganizers will cover the costs of accommodation and travel (round-tripeconomy-class ticket) plus a small sum of allowance, for one presenter of eachpaper accepted. No registration fee will be charged.
Submission Deadlines: Draft paper(s)/extendedabstract(s) by Oct 15, 2015; Final Paper(s) by Nov. 15, 2015. Submissions inEnglish shall be emailed to adbiresearch@adbi.org. Only accepted papers will benotified, before Oct 20, 2015. For inquiries, please email real_cn@163.com.
