  Being a serious scientist is a way of life, not the following of a formula of Fashionable Theory plus Fashionable Econometrics = Publication.

  You can be an economic scientist. Ask what matters to you. Do it. Find out something about the world. Really find it out. Really explain it, with reference to the great conversation of economics since 1776. Really.
