My research focuses on interdisciplinary study of (1) crystal chemistry of clays, rock-forming minerals, and nano-crystals; (2) role of nanopore in controlling geochemical reactions; (3) roles of microbes in controlling mineral shape, structure, and compositions; (4) mineral interface-induced carbonate mineralization: a fundamental process relevant to carbon sequestration; (5) Formation mechanism of banded iron formation (BIF) and dolomite / dolomitization; and (6) functional minerals for environment clean up and renewable energy applications.
One of our new discoveries is that geochemical reactions inside nano-pores and nanotubes (confined solution) are greatly different from those in conventional environments (un-confined solution). The study will provide a linkage, currently missing, between laboratory measurements (in unconfined solution) and real environmental system in the 揷ritical zone?(in confined pore solution).

Dr. Rujun Gong earned his MD and PhD degrees from Nanjing University School of Medicine in Nanjing, China. The Research Institute of Nephrology at Nanjing university is the largest and most academic renal program in China. There, he received systemic and intensive residency and fellowship training in both clinical nephrology and molecular cell biology. In November 2001, Dr. Gong came to Brown Medical School to study as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Division of Renal Diseases focusing on the pathogenesis of renal inflammation and mechanisms of fibrogenesis. As a fellow, he did truly outstanding work testing therapeutic interventions on progressive chronic renal diseases. These studies resulted in multiple high impact publications in leading nephrology journals. In recognition of his significant accomplishments as a fellow, Dr. Gong was recruited as Instructor in Medicine in 2004 becoming a member of the full-time faculty at Brown. In that capacity, he has continued to work diligently and productively, deciphering multiple aspects of pathophysiology of progressive chronic renal disease. In year 2006, he was promoted to Assistant Professor. Dr. Gong has successfully mentored or trained numerous medical students, residents, nephrology fellows and postdoctoral research fellows in his research program. He will continue to make contributions to renal medicine and research at Brown in the future.

Dr. Hua Zhang is currently an assistant professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering since July 2006. He received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Nanjing University in China in 1992 and 1995, respectively, and his Ph.D. in Nano-Chemistry from Peking University in China in July 1998. He joined Prof. Frans C. De Schryver’s group at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (KULeuven) in Belgium as a Research Associate in January 1999. Then he moved to Prof. Chad A. Mirkin’s group at Northwestern University as a Postdoctoral Fellow in July 2001. He started to work at NanoInk Inc. (USA) as a Research Scientist/Chemist in August 2003. After that, he worked as a Senior Research Scientist at Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Singapore from November 2005 to July 2006. He has published 2 book chapters, 40+ papers and 20+ patent applications. His H-index is 15. He is an Associate Editor of International Journal of Nanoscience (2007-) and sits on the Editorial Board of NANO (2007-). He has been invited as a reviewer for a number of premier journals, including Nano Letters, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Chemistry of Materials, Journal of Physical Chemistry, Langmuir, Biomacromolecules, Nanotechnolgy, etc. He has been a Session Chair and in the Organizing Committee for some international conferences. Dr. Zhang's research interests lie broadly in computer communication and networks, Internet technology, multimedia and emerging applications. His current research thrusts focus primarily on building highly scalable, resilient and secure Internet infrastructure and mechanisms to enhance Internet service availability, reliability and security. In addition, he’s working on developing next-generation, service-oriented, manageable Internet architectures to provide better support for creation, deployment, operations and management of value-added emerging Internet applications and services.

Zhang has been widely recognized for his work. He received the National Science Foundation's CAREER Award in 1997, McKnight Land-Grant Professorship in 2000, Miller Visiting Professorship at Miller Institute for Basic Sciences (UC Berkeley) in 2004 and IT George Taylor Distinguished Research Award in 2005. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications; including journals, conference/workshop papers, articles, and one book. Zhang was awarded two Best Paper Awards for his research. He has also served on the Editorial Boards of IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking and Journal of Computer Networks, chaired several conferences and workshops, and is a member of the IEEE and ACM groups.

Research
My main research interests lie in the area of computer networks and real-time, distributed, multimedia systems. One challenging and critical research problem in this area is how to provide Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees to support real-time multimedia applications in the emerging high speed, integrated services packet networks. My research has focused primarily on issues related to this central theme and addresses them from both the standpoint of network systems and of application or end-host systems.

One major research effort is devoted to the investigation of the interplay of scheduling, admission control, resource management, and service/pricing models in supporting QoS guarantees for multimedia applications. Another major area of research is the end system support for real-time transport of multimedia, in particular, variable-bit-rate video. A new paradigm for multimedia information delivery across heterogeneous networks is currently under development based on a novel architecture with integrated end-to-end server and network support for QoS guarantees.

Other research interests include performance evaluation and modeling of computer systems, distributed and parallel computation, applied probability and queueing theory, and theory of computation.

I am a professor at the School of Meteorology (SOM), and Director of the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Storms (CAPS), University of Oklahoma (OU). Before joining SOM in 1999 as a faculty member, I was with CAPS for 10 years, starting as a post-doc and ending as a senior scientist. I remained as the CAPS scientific director until resuming the director position in 2006. I was the main developer of the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS), and continue to use it for a variety of reserach.
I hold a B.S. degree in meteorology from Nanjing University, China, and a Ph.D. degree in meteorology from University of Reading, U.K.

My research interests include the development of advanced numerical techniques, and modeling and data assimilation systems, the simulation, prediction, dynamics, and predictability of mesoscale and convective scale weather systems, tornado dynamics, advanced data assimilation and retrieval techniques for radar and other high-resolution observations.

I have taught graduate level classes Objective Analysis and Data Assimilation (OBAN2008) and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD2009) and undergraduate-level courses Physical Mechanics (PM2000) and Mesoscale Meteorology (MM2007).

I earned my B.S. in Computational Mathematics from Nanjing University and my Ph.D in Applied Mathematics from Florida State University . I worked 2 years at ICES of University of Texas at Austin before I moved to UNLV. Also I worked as summer faculty researcher at U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory for a few years. During August 2008 - July 2009, I was on leave from UNLV and worked as Associate Director for the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics (IPAM) at UCLA.
