Continue to read book "Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It" by Chris Voss and Tahl Raz
This is a great career enhancing book. It is both interesting and very useful. In it the author talks about how to gain influence over people - no matter who they are or what motivates them. Chris Voss tells many stories in the book; some from his days with the FBI, others from his current business and even a few about himself. The principles he discusses are based on understanding ourselves as human beings. One of the hidden benefits in this book are the insights we can get about ourselves as well as better understanding how to maximize our interactions with others.
You will find plenty of other gems in this book:
The right way to use vocal tone to persuade
Mirroring the other persons words to build better rapport
Anchoring words or emotions to use to your advantage
Getting people to say “that’s right” (and why it is an important saying)
The power of the word "fair" so you can close more deals
… and that is just the first half of the book.
It's full of not only great theory and stories that may not apply to your daily life and negotiations, but also examples of how they could apply to everything from negotiating your salary, to buying a house. FIlled with stories of Voss's time in law enforcement, this book offers practical, real-world, easy-to-use techniques to get better at negotiation, conflict management, and just plain having better conversations and better relationships. It teaches you why you want to hear "That's right" more than you want to hear "yes" and how to get there. Empathy and understanding the position the other person is in can help you get to where you want, without getting stuck in the rut of compromise.
