Continue to read book "Never Split the Difference: Negotiating As If Your Life Depended On It" by Chris Voss and Tahl Raz
This is a transformative book. Written by a former FBI lead hostage negotiator, it's tested and proven techniques. They will will take practice to master, but I've already seen first-hand they can really work. The book is full of engaging stories that illustrate various techniques, and each chapter ends with a "key lessons" summary. This is not a pick-and-choose type of thing though. You need to understand the whole philosophy and use it all as a package, or you won't see the benefits.
General summary:
+ Negotiation is not a contest to win, but a process of discovery and learning what is important to your counterpart.
+ Your counterpart is not your adversary, the situation is.
+ Be sincere. Be open, sincere, calm, and patient at all times.
+ Enlist your counterpart in spending their energy to solve your problem. Do this by establishing rapport and asking open-ended questions. The conversation keeps moving but you aren't conceding anything.
