Chapter 6 : external context: industry analysis
Reflection: in the preceding chapters, we had argued that a firm’s performance is determined by the interaction of its context, both internal and external, and by the actions, its managers pursue. In this chapter, we begin the task of understanding how the firm’s external context, particularly its market environment, affects its performance. Our goal of this analysis is to provide tools a general manager of a firm in any industry needs to answer two related questions. The first one is what characteristics of my market context are important determinants of my firm’s profitability. For example, competitor’s behavior, industry demand, the effects of firm entry and so forth. Answering questions like those allows her to identify the external factors contributing to the change of this performance. The second questions is given my market context and my firm’s assets, what strategic actions can I take to improve my firm’s performance. Selecting the most efficient actions depends on the understanding the nature of this question.

我们在学习、实验和思考上投入了大量资源，因为它们是洞察力的基本组成部分。学习是通过人、信息和经验来获得多样化、稀有和有价值的知识积木。思考就是将这些积木组合成稀有而有价值的组合。实验就是要看看这些组合在现实世界中的表现。
我们衡量成功的标准是我们洞察力的质量，而不是我们完成待办事项的速度。换句话说，我们衡量成功的标准从效率转向有效性。
