APPS AREN’T GOING AWAY anytime soon—andneither are the jobs creating them.Application developers—the people responsiblefor building and updating computer and mobileapps—make a median salary of $101,790 a year, andfor the next five to seven years they’re going to bemore in demand than any other American workermaking a six-figure salary.
The U.S. will be adding 255,140 app developers tothe job market between 2016 and 2026, accordingto occupational forecasting website ProjectionsCentral. That’s about 26,000 new openings for appdevelopers every year, in addition to the estimated60,170 positions becoming available annually toreplace current app developers.
Because platforms like Apple’s iOS and Google’sAndroid are open-source—meaning the code tobuild apps that work on them is freely available—anyone with coding and developing skills has theability to create for users. Consequently, any entrepreneurwho hires an app developer can create aproduct readily available to billions of daily potentialcustomers worldwide.
In terms of training, aspiring app developers canmajor in computer science at any two- or four-yearprogram, but a lot of app developers are self-taught.More important than preliminary education, though,is the constant upkeep in skill sets: App developersneed to be well-versed in the latest coding languagesto make sure they’re still a viable candidate fortheir current or prospective job. An app developerwho stopped learning new languages in 2012, forexample, wouldn’t know the ins and outs of HTML5and would be underqualified for a job today, muchless in 2026.
Of course, there are other positions that willpump up the job market in substantial numbersover the next several years. But the jobs in greaterdemand pay far less. Fast-food workers, aides forthe elderly, and registered nurses will see morethan 43,000 new openings in each of their industriesannually.
Other six-figure-salary jobs are boosting theworkforce at a slower pace: The runner-up occupation, general and operations managers, will constitute41,000 fewer jobs than app developers betweennow and 2026—enough time for all the high schoolersout there to start thinking in code.
