H·G·韦尔斯是英国著名作家。早年在一家布店当过学徒，后毕业于英国皇家学院。曾尝试以教书为生，却以新闻和文学创作闻名于世。其所著《时间机器》、《隐身人》为现代科幻小说开山之作。一生涉猎甚广，虽不是历史学家，却以《世界史纲》跻身于史学大家之列。但《世界史纲》乃鸿篇巨制，煌煌近百万字，并非一般读者所能吸纳。
赫伯特·乔治·威尔斯：我写作这部《世界简史》的最大愿望，是希望读者能像读小说一样，一口气把它读完。为此，我在书中省去了那些繁琐的事件，以一种简洁明了的写法，把我们现今所知道的历史讲述出来。本书将让读者获得一个对历史的整体看法，作为进一步研究某一特定时期或特定国家的历史所依托的框架。此外，阅读本书也能为阅读我的另一本历史著作《世界史纲》获得诸多有益的准备。然而，本书最主要的目的还是让那些无暇细读《世界史纲》的读者清晰理解人类伟大冒险活动的那些模糊的、琐碎的概念，纠正先前形成的一些错误认识。本书绝不是《世界史纲》的缩写版，因为《世界史纲》就其本身的目的来说，是无法缩写和提炼的。本书则采用了崭新的立意和写法，是一部更通俗、更普及的历史著作。（赫伯特·乔治·威尔斯）

赫伯特•乔治•威尔斯（1866—1946），英国著名科幻作家、社会思想家，20纪初英国现实主义小说三杰之一，代表作《时间机器》。威尔斯一生创作了一百多部作品，内容涉及文学、科学、历史、社会、政治等各个领域，是现代最多产的作家之一。一战后，创作了长达100万字的《世界史纲》，展现了其作为历史学家的一面。《世界简史》是其继巨著《世界史纲》后，又一史学通俗经典之作著作。

Iron had also come now into civilization out of the north; the Hittites, the precursors of the Armenians, had it first and communicated its use to the Assyrians, and an Assyrian usurper, Sargon II, armed his troops with it.
