MIT Dean of Admissions resigns
The big news in Boston/Cambridge academia as well as nationally for the past few days is that the Dean of Admission at MIT, Ms  Marilee Jones, well known national figure in college admission circles, was forced to resign because she misrepresented her qualifications in application for the job of an assistant 28 years ago.  The entry level  job actually did not require a college degree but Ms Jones claimed that she had one. Upon being hired she proved herself as very capable and gradually rise through the rank until 8 years ago she was promoted to be the Dean of Admission for MIT after a rigorous search among many candidates.  Her work was exemplary by all accounts and her record spotless. But as soon as her misrepresentation 28 years ago was discovered, she was asked to resign. Everyone feel sorry for her but no one questioned the necessity of her resignation. This is simply a case of academia self-policing and 杀鸡警猴. An organization such as MIT has a worldwide reputation to protect and preserve. Only through such resolute action can “trust and integrity” be maintained. This further illustrates the second point in my open letter to the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 2006

Corruption in academia must be eliminated through rigorous and strict self-policing. It is done for the greater good of society and in fairness to the majority of academics who play by the rules.
