3 of the 22 subsectors recorded growth and the scale of the decline
continues to narrow: Same-store sales fell 3.0% YoY in February on a
simple average basis (after a confirmed 2.8% drop in January), the 23rd
consecutive monthly decline. But the scale of the decline has continued to
shrink since December, when the first signs of a recovery in demand for nonessential,
non-urgent items became visible. Despite the adverse weather
factors, however, including 10 snowy days in Tokyo (the most in 26 years), a
steady recovery in sales is now becoming apparent. Sales fell 2.6% for pure
retailers (-2.7% in January) and 4.2% for restaurants (-3.2%), their 19th and
15th consecutive months of decline, respectively. Amongst the subsectors,
shoes/bag/accessory stores, sports shops, consumer electronics stores,
department stores, apparel stores, and home furnishing stores all achieved
notable YoY improvements. In contrast, the recovery in sales of basic
necessities remains weak, with convenience stores, drugstores, and
supermarkets all continuing to struggle with sales of daily-use items.
• YoY growth by subsector: The top three subsectors were: mail order
(+10.2%), sports shops (+3.0%), and shoes/bag/accessory stores (+0.5%). The
bottom three were: book/CD/DVD sales/rental shops (-6.4%), convenience
stores (-6.2%), and take-out food shops (-5.8%). In terms of YoY
improvement, the top three subsectors were: mail order (+21.2ppt),
shoes/bag/accessory stores (+12.8ppt), and sports shops (+11.7ppt). The
bottom three were: convenience stores (-10.4ppt), drugstores (-1.6ppt), and
take-out food shops (-0.7ppt).
• Top three in 3M-12M moving average differential: Absolute: Komehyo
(2780), JIN (3046), and Tsutsumi (7937). MoM improvement: Honeys (2792),
Blue Grass (7478), and Otsuka Kagu (8186).
• Our report includes 265 companies (201 pure retailers, 64 restaurants), with
February figures for the 243 (183 pure retailers, 60 restaurants) that had
complied them as of March 24.
• Calendar factors: Flat for companies closing books at month end and on the
15th. One more Saturday for companies closing books on the 20th.
