对于“吃土”，BBC是这样报道的：
他们虽然直译成了"eat dirt/soil"，但也解释了一下。
实际上，“吃土”就是一个夸张的表达，就是“自己已经穷到吃土”的意思。
英语有一个形容“穷”的词，也跟“土”有关——be dirt poor
dirt /dɜːt/，表示“泥土”，dirt poor 意思是“特别穷”，其实可以一定程度上理解为我们所说的“穷到吃土了”。
例句：
Their families were dirt poor but the parents were determined for their sons to have an education.
他们家徒四壁，但父母却下定了送儿子上学的决心。
Their ancestors had been dirt poor and never saw royalty, let alone hung around with them?

“剁手”用英语该怎么说呢？
如果简单粗暴的翻译，那就是 chop off hands，chop /tʃɒp/ 切碎、砍、劈。
chop off hands 就是真的是“剁掉手”的意思……
新华网的 twitter 则将这个表达翻译成了 hands-chopping people，也就是“剁手族”的意思。
但实际上，国外是有类似的表达的。
big spender
这个词用来形容那些消费大户，花钱大手大脚的人。
spend 是“花费”，spender 就是“花钱的人、消费的人”。
big spender 指的是“花很多钱的人”。
例句：
John is a big spender and never thinks of saving a penny.
约翰花钱大手大脚从来不知道存钱。

deposit 就是“定金”的意思。
