2021年10月28日，美国社交媒体平台Facebook（脸书）宣布，将部分品牌更名为“Meta”。

对于此次更名，Facebook创始人扎克伯格解释为“品牌重定义”，即在Facebook网站及其旗下多个品牌的基础上，构建一个新品牌。

此前，“Facebook”一般既指全球网民常用的社交媒体平台，也指开发和维护该平台运营的公司。

此次宣布更名的是Facebook公司，扎克伯格称，Facebook公司将致力于把现有的Facebook以及公司旗下的多个社交媒体、实时通讯平台进行逐步整合，打造一个全新的Meta平台。

而就在前不久，据多家美国媒体报道，Facebook一名前员工向美国证券交易委员会举报称，Facebook公司网站管理人员故意纵容仇恨言论和虚假信息的存在，他们认为打击这些言论的行为将会阻碍Facebook公司的发展。

悉数近年来Facebook面临的丑闻，从泄露用户隐私数据，到被指责干涉总统大选，再到封停时任总统特朗普的账号，每一次都透露出Facebook与美国情治机构长期勾结，显示出美式民主的双标嘴脸，同时也让Facebook的口碑进一步下滑。

所以外界认为，公司更名为Meta，意味着其企业名称与最近陷入麻烦的社交网络平台Facebook将脱钩，凸显出公司专注于转向以虚拟现实为主的新兴计算平台。有批评人士抨击脸书品牌重塑，指控脸书正在损害民主，同时传播假讯息和仇恨，并表示“这是毫无意义的更名，不应分散对脸书问责所需的调查、监管和真正独立监督的焦点”。
