<b>rote 是名词，意思是“死记硬背”</b>（a memorising process using routine or repetition, often without full attention or comprehension）；
rote 最常见的用法是“learn (something) by rote”和“rote learning”，当然，除了 learn 之外，rote 也可以与 recite, memorise, exercise 等词搭配使用。在部分正式文本中，rote 也可以用来指“机械的做法，老一套”（mechanical routine）。
