As said, GDP does not tell the whole picture of a country’s economic development; however, it does show the relative developments among different regions in China. Moreover, Guangdong province relies heavily on foreign direct investment and its export-oriented strategy to ‘leap forward’ and hence stand out from the crowd of other provinces. I would thus say that productivity growth in Guangdong province has played a major part in the Guangdong economy with which other provinces cannot catch up; continuous high GDP growth has a causal link with the growth of productivity.
