I have lived long enough to see several chapters of the strug￾gle for human dignity in America. I have walked with those
who gave their lives to open doors that had been closed for far
too long. I have stood at the side of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
not only as we marched for civil rights but also as we worked
to build economic rights—because we knew that the right to
vote, while essential, was only part of the journey. Our dream
was freedom—not only freedom from segregation but freedom
to pursue opportunity, dignity, and prosperity.
The Civil Rights Movement was never just about integrating
lunch counters; it was about integrating the economy. We learned
that equality under the law means little if people remain locked
out of the systems that build wealth. As I have often said, to live
in a capitalist society without access to capital is a new form of
slavery. The next phase of our struggle must therefore be
economic—making capitalism work for everyone, not just the
fortunate few.
I have known John Hope Bryant for more than 30 (???)
years. I have watched him grow, study, persevere, endure
countless skeptics and detractors, and ultimately dedicate his
life to advancing a simple but profound truth: that financial
literacy and economic access are the civil rights issue of our
time. This book, Capitalism for All, is not just theory. It comes
from lived experience, from witnessing both pain and possibil￾ity in our communities, and from John’s unwavering belief that
every human being has the potential to rise when given an
honest chance.
Foreword
by Ambassador Andrew Young
xiv Foreword
The struggle for civil rights was never only about laws. It was
about dignity. It was about being seen. It was about being valued.
And it was always about the right to participate fully in the life
of our society. That includes the right to earn, to save, to invest,
and to build. Even in our most difficult days, Dr. King under￾stood this. In 1967 and 1968, as the movement turned toward
economic equality, we began organizing the Poor People’s
Campaign. We intended to bring the voices of the economically
excluded—Black, white, Brown, rural, and urban—to the steps
of Washington. We wanted to say clearly: America cannot be
whole when so many are locked out of its prosperity.
John Hope Bryant has taken up that unfinished work and is
moving Dr. King’s Dream forward.
He has done it not through protest, but through partnership—
by working with banks, businesses, schools, and governments
to expand access to capital and financial capability.
He has done it by going into neighborhoods that too many
write off and by believing in people that others overlook.
He has done it by providing adults and children, entrepre￾neurs and small business owners, and those impacted by natu￾ral disasters with the financial literacy skills they need to move
their lives to the next level.
He has done it by building Operation HOPE not as a charity
but as a catalyst—a bridge that connects everyday people to
the tools of ownership.
This is important, because charity alone cannot solve pov￾erty. Charity can provide relief, but relief is temporary. What
people need are pathways—roads into the economy, held open
with fairness and respect. John and the team at Operation
HOPE understand that transformation happens when people
are trusted with responsibility and equipped with knowledge.
A person who understands money, credit, and investment has
power—not power over others, but power over their own life.
When I served as US Ambassador to the United Nations and
later as Mayor of Atlanta, I saw firsthand how inclusive invest￾ment can transform communities. We attracted billions of dollars
Foreword xv
in development not by shutting people out but by bringing them
in—by ensuring that women- and minority-owned businesses
had a seat at the table. We built a city where prosperity grew
because more people shared in it. That lesson is at the heart of
this book. Capitalism works best when it works for everyone.
Today, too many people in America live paycheck to
paycheck—not because they lack intelligence, talent, or work
ethic but because they have never been taught how the system
works. They have never been shown how to use credit wisely,
how to negotiate fair terms, how to build savings, or how to
start a business. We would never send someone into the world
unable to read. Why then do we send them in unable to under￾stand the language of money?
Financial literacy is a civil right. And economic inclusion is
an extension of democracy.
Through Operation HOPE and his vision of Capitalism for
All, John Hope Bryant reminds us that the free enterprise system,
when guided by values and inclusiveness, remains the greatest
engine for human progress ever devised. Capitalism succeeded
because it built a middle class; now it must prove itself by includ￾ing the poor and the underserved. This is not charity—it is smart
economics, rooted in justice and common sense.
What I admire about John is that he believes in people’s
capacity to grow. He has seen what I have seen: that when you
give people a chance—not a handout, but a real chance—they
rise. They build businesses. They raise strong families. They
strengthen their communities. They contribute to the nation.
That is why the title Capitalism for All is not an exaggera￾tion. It is a necessary correction. Our economy will not reach
its full potential until all of our people do.
If we teach our children financial literacy, open access to
capital, and align profit with purpose, we can build communi￾ties that thrive rather than merely survive. I have always
believed that business and government, working together, can
serve the public good—what I call public-purpose capitalism.
John’s work carries that belief forward for a new generation.
xvi Foreword
Capitalism for All challenges us to finish the unfinished work
of the Civil Rights Movement: to extend the promise of economic freedom to every citizen.
America’s greatest resource is not oil or steel or technology.
It is our people. And when one-third of our households struggle financially, when wholeneighborhoods lack access to banking services, when credit barriers prevent good ideas from
becoming businesses, we are leaving our greatest resource
underdeveloped. That is not only unjust. It is unwise.
This book invites us to see capitalism not as a winner-takeall contest, but as a shared enterprise in which everyone can
participate. It calls us back to a very old truth: We rise higher
when we rise together.
John Hope Bryant is a bridge between the moral imagination of the civil rights generation and the economic possibilities
of the present. He carries forward not only Dr. King’s legacy,
but also the hopes of millions who have never been handed a
map to prosperity.
This book is that map.
It is not a book of slogans. It is a book of solutions.
My prayer is that you read it with an open heart and, more
important, that you act upon it. Because the work of building a
just society did not end in the 1960s. It continues today. And
the next chapter will be written not only in our laws, but in our
banks, our schools, our businesses, and our communities.
