We are sorry to report that we cannot admit you to the master's program of the Stanford Statistics Department.  There were very few openings available for new students; competition was keen, and unfortunately many well-qualified applicants could not be offered admission.

It is always difficult for us to write this kind of letter to many deserving students.  Our admissions process is thorough and as fair as possible, but inevitably we wind up having to compare people with vastly different backgrounds and strengths.  We appreciate your interest in us and wish you success in your future studies.
