PhD Stipend in Global Wind Energy Shipping and Logistics (915-13075)    At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in Copenhagen, a PhD position is available within the study programme Mechanical Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from February 1, 2014. The stipend aims at investigating the market potential for shipping and related logistics services in the global wind energy sector as well as determining required competencies for the Danish maritime industry for remaining competitive in this area. The position is jointly sponsored by the Danish Maritime Fund and Aalborg University. Job description
The purpose of this PhD stipend is 1) to analyze the global wind energy shipping and logistics market up to 2050 with an aim towards mapping out the revenue potential for different shipping and logistics entrants and 2) to determine capabilities (including technical) required for the Danish maritime industry to gain leadership in this market. Scope of the project is global - including wind energy markets in Denmark, Europe, China, Asia, USA, South America and special focus will be put on the two first-mentioned regions/countries.
It is part of a project which will include the following tasks to be accomplished:
1. Analysis and quantification of current and future wind energy market and development of market outlook scenarios in phases, e.g. 2020, 2030 and up to 2050.
2. Investigation of configuration of current and future supply chains.
3. Analysis of cost structures and break down into sub-processes and individual cost types like shipping, ports, land, and others.
4. Quantification of requirements and capabilities (including technical) to be an active participant in the wind energy shipping and logistics sector in the future.
5. Development of strategy suggestions for the Blue Denmark (the Danish maritime industry).
The project is expected to include industry interviews, global site visits, quantitative model building, academic research, as well as at least 2 (possibly 3) in-depth case studies with relevant Danish as well as international industry participants.
Each case study is preferably to include analysis of an end-2-end wind energy supply chain in detail and a review of the supply chain set-up from different shipping and logistics angles, i.e. taking both inbound assembly, outbound transportation (shipping), installation, operation and maintenance of wind energy parks (off-shore) into account.
Aalborg University and the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering play a major role as a research partner for the Danish and European wind energy industry. Currently Aalborg University does research together with wind turbine manufacturers (Siemens, Vestas, LM, Suzlon Energy) and customers/suppliers of the industry in a number of areas. Recently Aalborg University and the Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering have also increased focus on maritime logistics and related challenges for the Blue Denmark.
Applicants for the position must possess the required academic skills, i.e. a Master's degree, a MBA degree + additional merits or similar which in total is equivalent to 120 ECTS from a recognized Danish or foreign institution. The assessment committee will give preference to candidates with the following qualifications:
• Business and/or engineering educational background.
• Documented business experience within global wind energy or shipping and logistics and if possible initial research experience or publications within the field.
• International experience from either studying or working abroad.
• Ability to work closely with international academic staff (at the Department) and deal with multiple international stakeholders.
• Capable of managing business stakeholders as regular reporting to the blue Denmark and an advisory board consisting of members of the Danish wind energy and maritime industry is required during the project period. Previous managerial experience will be an advantage.
• Capable of managing project milestones and deliverables.
• Willingness to travel 30-90 days per year.
• Dedicated interest in using this as a basis for pursuing a PhD position and degree in the coming years.
