Among the important scientific developments of the 20th century is the explosive growth in statistical reasoning and methods for application to studies of human health. Examples include developments in likelihood methods for inference, epidemiologic statistics, clinical trials, survival analysis, and statistical genetics. Substantive problems in public health and biomedical research have fueled the development of statistical methods, which in turn have improved our ability to draw valid inferences from data. The objective of Biostatistics is to advance statistical science and its application to problems of human health and disease, with the ultimate goal of advancing the public's health.

江湖传此，以为邓玉娇者，今之烈女也。宰恶吏于当场，抒民愤于巴东，壮哉！余则谓：僻远之乡，民族之地，秦汉以降，无论流官土司，均以抚民为善策，不以暴烈残其民。土家、苗人等，民风淳朴，邓玉娇抑或苗族也——官府倘迫之太甚，则其血性发作，往往啸聚山林，所谓官逼民反，不得不反，此之谓也。邓贵大等，小镇之恶吏也，区区巴东如此，国中此辈衮衮不可胜计焉尔！纵吏残民，国祸之源也。则沪上刀客，巴东烈女之起，有何怪哉？
