In his more recent research, Mr. Deaton highlighted how reliable measures of individual household consumption levels can be used to discern mechanisms behind economic development.

The Swedish academy highlighted Mr. Deaton’s effective use of household surveys and noted how he had shown that household data can shed light on issues from the relationships between income and calorie intake to the extent of gender discrimination within the family.
