2012 is sitting on top of the world-even though the movie is all about the end of it.

According to early estimates, Columbia Pictures.apocalyptic thriller-purportedly based on Mayan prophesy-pulled in $65 million at the box office this weekend, good for the number one slot.

The Disney movie 'A Christmas Carol' starring Jim Carrey, finished second with $22.3 million; 'The Men Who Stare At Goats,' an Overture film with George Clooney, finished in third with $6.2 million.

Showing surprising strength was the grim, low-budget, wordily-titled urban drama 'Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire.' The Lionsgate film finished fourth at the box office, bringing in $6.2 million while playing in limited release. It helped that talk show powerhouse Oprah Winfrey put her name behind the project.

The Michael Jackson's concert film 'This is It,' from Sony Pictures/Columbia, rounded out the top five weekend films, with $5.1 million.

'2012 proves that audiences love a good popcorn movie even in the midst of Oscar season,' Paul Dergarabedian, president of the box-office division of Hollywood.com, said via email. 'Once again the eclecticism of the Fall is highlighted by 'Precious' sharing the Top 5 with mainstream fare like 2012 and 'A Christmas Carol.' Not to mention the little Fox that could with a strong limited release debut of 'Fantastic Mr. Fox' with $260,000 in just 4 theatres and a per-theatre average of $65,000.'
