Jocko Willink and Leif Babin scored a hit with their fine, bestselling book, 'Extreme Ownership.' The US Navy Seal officers utilize their personal experiences in the Iraq War to illuminate leadership issues that recur in business and other settings.

'The Dichotomy of Leadership' follows with a systemic consideration of the application of dichotomies. The authors point out that even the most fundamental leadership principles may be taken too far, so as to fail those who are being served:

"This idea continues on with just about everything a leader does. Leaders must be close to their people, but not so close that it becomes a problem. They must hold the line with discipline but not become tyrannical....[B]alance in leadership is crucial to victory. It must be monitored at all times and it must be modulated to specific situations as they arise."

The book has three sections: "Balancing People," "Balancing the Mission," and "Balancing Yourself." Each chapter focuses on a recurring, practical leadership dichotomy, e.g., "Resolute, but Not Overbearing," "Disciplined, Not Rigid," etc.
