Handling Qualitative Data

A new textbook has just hit the shelves, written for all researchers – students and practitioners – who meet qualitative data and wish to do it justice. It introduces qualitative methods in a uniquely practical manner, carrying the years of experience of its author in assisting researchers to manage projects of all sizes and subtleties, in all qualitative research disciplines. "Vintage Lyn", one reader commented. "It’s down to earth, no-nonsense, witty and wise, but very sensitive to the delicacy of qualitative records and the uncertainties of the novice researcher."

Richards, L. (2005) Handling Qualitative Data: A Practical Guide, Sage Publications, London

Qualitative Data Analysis

Qualitative Data Analysis introduces key qualitative approaches, demonstrating how to carry them out using NVivo. The book shows clearly how NVivo can be used to support techniques such as coding, theory building, theory testing, cross-sectional analysis, modelling and writing.

Qualitative Project Book

Learn NVivo as you use it, with your data or sample data included with demonstration software. Explore processes of getting started, interpreting, seeking and trialling explanations and theories. The Project Book combines informality and authority, with frequent tips and reflections on what’s being done.

Qualitative Methods

For those approaching qualitative analysis, Readme offers a no-mysteries map of major methods and techniques, with advice on choosing and using them appropriately, fitting method to the question. Each practical chapter is accompanied by a tutorial on NVivo, and a CD carries those tutorials with sample data.

Hi Everybody,

I am using N6 for analysing the data I collected for my PhD research about building social capital trhough information and communication technology in rural areas in developing countries . I am applying the coding paradigm (Strauss, 1987; Strauss & Corbin, 1990) under the grounded theory method (Glaser & Strauss, 1967).

So far, I used the N6 nodes for organising chunks of textual data that fit under general ideas or topics . Soon after, I went through each node and proceeded on open coding by creating memos . Now, I need to move to axial coding, which implies going into a more conceptual level. How can I manipulate the N6 memos? It is a silly question, but I am not sure if I am using all the N6 power correctly

By the way, my approach is a holistic multiple case study (Yin, 2003). At the moment, I open coded the first case; later on, I will go through the other ones. I treat each case as a different N6 project and foresee that at some point I will have to merge different projects.

Any comment or suggestion will be very much appreciated.

Best regards,
