NHS chiefs say that because hospitals are so stretched they are going to have to start cancelling operations sooner rather than later to free up beds. As the number of patients with Covid- 19 increases, they will start to move off specialist isolation units on to general wards. To make space, hospitals will have to start discharging patients before it is ideal, accepting a higher risk that they are not fully recovered.
