Preface
The Japan Statistical Yearbook is a comprehensive and systematic compendium of the basic statistical
information of Japan, covering wide-ranging fields such as land, population, economy, society and
culture.
The origin of the Yearbook goes back to the Shimbi Statistical Tables published in 1872, four years
after the Meiji Restoration of 1868. The first Statistical Yearbook of Japan was published in 1882, and
since then it had continually been published with renewed data every year to reach the 59th issue before it
was suspended due to World War II. After the war, the yearbook was revived as the Japan Statistical
Yearbook in 1949, and has been published annually.
I hope that this yearbook will serve a wide range of people as the principal source of statistical
information on the conditions of Japan, and as a guide to original sources of statistics in each field.
The contents of this yearbook are also accessible from the website of the Statistics Bureau, Ministry of
Internal Affairs and Communications, and are provided by e-book.
I welcome any comments and suggestions in order to improve future issues of the yearbook.
On this occasion, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to various organisations and
individuals for their cooperation and support in compiling this yearbook.
