“Comparative Forum on China and India From Economic, Social, and Cultural Perspectives: A Symposium for Emerging Scholars,” February 18, 2012, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Beijing.

Co-hosted by China Economic Transition and Development Research Center (CETDRC) of the Institute of Economics at Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and the India China Institute (ICI) at The New School, New York, in partnership with the Center for India Studies and the China Center for Economic Research at Peking University, School of Environmental Sciences at Beijing Normal University, and Horizon Research Consultancy Group, we invite abstract submissions for the inaugural “Comparative Forum on India and China.” The symposium will take place over a day and a half with a tentative date of February 18, 2012.

This unique initiative is designed to provide a platform for researchers at an advanced stage of their MPhil/PhD work, including young scholars who received their PhD within the last 10 years, to present their ongoing research and to discuss recent advances and new trends in research on India.  The conceptual framework for this project draws on ICI’s experience over the past seven years in which the institute has been committed to building a community of scholars who are engaged in research agendas that focus on new and innovative ways of approaching the topic of India-China relations.  In addition, this initiative builds on The New School’s tradition of fostering horizontal and vertical knowledge sharing across disciplines and amongst scholars in different stages of their careers.  As such, we highly encourage applications from a wide range of methodological approaches and fields including, but not limited to, economics, international relations, history, anthropology, and design/art.  Co-authored papers are welcome, as are comparative papers that study important debates in India and China to help develop a better understanding of the possible futures of India-China studies.

The first day of the symposium will be open to the public, and ICI fellows and other scholars committed to the study of India-China relations will be invited to serve as moderators and discussants.  The second day will be a closed door session aimed at providing a space for the establishment and strengthening of scholarly networks in which participants may discuss methodological and other relevant issues. This annual forum is meant to serve with or those working towards PhDs by providing a space to share their research and explore opportunities for advancing individual and collaborative scholarships.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To participate in the symposium, interested candidates are invited to send a one-page paper proposal of no more than 1000 words. On the proposal, please be sure to provide your name, your current affiliation, and your contact information. Please send it to indiachina.institute@gmail.com by September 25, 2011 with “EMERGING SCHOLARS PROPOSAL SUBMISSION” in the subject line.

Selected scholars will be required to submit full-length papers (word length 6,000 words).

Papers need to be written in English. However, we understand that language barriers may pose challenges and will therefore help provide basic editorial support in the final stages of the writing process.

REVIEW PROECESS
Selected scholars will be notified by October 25, 2011.

DEADLINES & TIMELINE
Submission of one-page proposals: September 25, 2011.
Notification of selected proposals:  October 25, 2011
Full paper submissions: January 10, 2012

THE SYMPOSIUM SERIES AND WORKING PAPERS SERIES
This symposium is part of a series where a similar event will be held with emerging Indian scholars who are conducting research on China.  Four selected presenters of the symposiums in India and China will be invited to present in Spring 2012 in The New School, New York.   Of these four scholars (two each from India and China) in both locations one scholar will be chosen from those presenters who are currently working on their PhD, while the other will be chosen from those who have received their PhD within the last ten years.

In addition, symposium presenters will be invited to submit to the India China Working Paper Series. The series welcomes analytical, interdisciplinary studies with a focus on India-China interactions, comparisons, and impact.
