Course description:
This the first semester of the two-semester sequence in advanced microeconomic analysis for PhD students. The goal of the course is to prepare students to analyze applied problems in international development using the tools of modern microeconomic theory. The course is a doctoral-level course in microeconomic theory with an eye toward policy applications in the area of development. For example, after developing the standard theory of consumption, we will take time to consider how the difficulties in measuring prices and income across countries affect the predictions of our models, and how microeconomic models of consumption can be modified in order to address these difficulties. Thus while the course is a course in economic theory, special care is taken to develop connections to the problems students may face in their future studies and careers.
