I believe such food scandle were not due to the management are Chinese or not. It is the social environment in the society that generated by the "Management of the Society". If everybody thins "money" is not an issue to solve the issue, then the consumers will be be protected, either the business man, or political persons.
When reading this article, lots of people might believe "biggest" or "no. one " will be the excitement factor. But please see how much those big market like walmark, Carrefour can earn from the very low labor fee in China. This is very sad. When cost this low, the living standard in for people won't change or it won't be very helpful to improving, instead, all the cash were transferred to the foreigners' pocket!

I consider price and freshness as main critera, and this is somewhat going with most people. Quality and trust may be important for next step since these are not easily gained and emphasized now, and will be more important when people have more to spend.

When I read this article, I didn't think of any excitement about getting the "biggest". It should be the fact no matter what based on the population base in China and the current development stage in China which is still has its advance over India.
By reading to the whole article, it more talks about how other foreign retailer can benefit from such big market base rather than how small business can see the light from such exciting news.  Those markets are too big to control over the pricing, cost and other invisible things in China, including the bride that no other small business, supplier can pay. Apply is an classic example of that.
The most concern it is that there is no "worry free" in domestic brand supplier because of the food scandal.  When things like this bring no trust to people in the country, the government should have think about it twice, three time, or even more. The only hope in people's mind is that "oh, 外国的东西好的, 无论它是在国内本土制造." somehow help such big supermarket earn in a rocket speed.
Don't forget, the price paying in china in these supermarket are the same, or even more if buying outside of the country with the fact that all products were produced in China and with the fact that tax, transportation, inspection....etc already excluded.

I hope "people have more to spend" is the fact rather than what it is on the surface due to the high inflation in China.

sorry, my original sentence is  "Those foreign supermarket not better than the domestic one as their food also coming from China, and most of the managment personnel are Chinese too." I said management personnel is only one factor. the most important one is the food also coming from China which reflects the dreadful society management in China.

I agree! I really can not stand high inflation, and it is always the poor and the mid-income suffer a lot!

I like go shopping and I'm sensitive to merchandises' prices. Last month, I found the price of cola went up again by about 1 yuan per 2.5l, much higher than what had been worried about in the high inflation period, about the same month last year, of less than 0.50 yuan per bottle comparatively.

However, I can buy electronic products on the net with a much lower price, for example, a few hundred yuan for a laptop or a panel computer. And shoes, skin care products have alternative cheaper ones to choose.

It's not so strange for China to become the biggest grocery market as the western countries are experiencing a difficult economic recession period. Purchasing groceries may become routine work both for housewives and afterwork office workers. It's a leisure for people under high pressure and one can solve some housework problems by going to supermarkets, at the same time doing exercises by walking and enjoying music, satisfied by a feeling of success with loads of various bought colorful merchandises. One can also feel the rhythms of modern life and keep up with the updated market information. But on the other hand, it may also be an indicator of slowing standard of living as what is measured by Engle's coefficient, the expenditures on necessities, i.e. foods, take up the main part of ordinary people's expenses.
