apropos expects a character string. Therefore use quotes

apropos("help")
[1] "help"         "help.request" "help.search"  "help.start"

Ok , I see . Thanks for your answer . In the book R for beginners (Chinese Edition) , there are no quotes in  this example , maybe the author miss it when write this book.

Could you help me solve another question ? When I copy the code in the book R for beginners (Chinese Edition) into R , and run , then system appear error information , but the book says this code can run normally.
