The Olympic Games have spawned millions of stories, of remarkable feats and superhuman effort, surprising triumphs, successes and devastating failures, and the making and breaking of numerous careers.
Newsrooms go into overdrive every four years as they struggle to report on every aspect of the greatest of sporting events. But what often gets sidelined is a focus on the athletes themselves, in their own time.
For a surprising number of Olympians, besides memories of the trials and tribulations of their careers, the Games also hold memories of love. Here is a selection of the love stories which flowered fom the Olympics.
Emil Zatopek and Dana Ingrova
With identical birth dates and nationalities, it seemed that Emil Zatopek and Dana Ingrova were really made for each other. A runner and a javelin thrower, they met at the qualifiers for the London Olympics in 1948. The romance blossomed from their congratulatory conversations as each broke personal bests, and by the end of London Emil had two medals, and they were engaged.
However it was the 1952 Helsinki Games that really put this remarkable couple in the history books. The 5000m and the javelin throw were scheduled at the same time; however they ran into each other just after Emil had won gold, and with his medal in her bag for luck she threw the Olympic record distance for a wooden javelin.
They are the first and last married couple to have become Olympic champions on the same day. They lived together until Emil’s death at the age of 78 in 2000, continuing to coach young athletes into their old age.
Ottavio Missoni and Rosita Jelmini
That’s right, we are talking about the real Missoni, the multi-million pound fashion house that was set up by Ottavio in 1947 as a workshop making tracksuits. And none of this would have happened had it not been for the London 1948 Olympics. At 17, Rosita was in London improving her English, while Ottavio was a dashing Italian Olympian in the hurdles relay team. She and her friends were invited to lunch with the Italian team aftervwatching their race, and the romance grew from there.
They married in 1953 and set up what was to become one of Europe’s most successful fashion houses. Today much of the company has been taken on by their three children; however the couple still have a hand in the business, and until last year Ottavio, aged 90, competed successfully in veteran athletics competitions.
Nikolai Prodanov and Diana Yorgova
The first couple to tie the knot in the Olympic village, gymnast Nikolai Prodanov and long-jumper Diana Yorgova, both from Bulgaria, were married by a Japanese Shinto priest at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Yorgova went on to win silver at the 1972 Games in Munich, after which the couple disappeared, virtually never to be heard of again.
Katerina Kurkova and Matthew Emmons
Katy and Matt met at the 2004 Olympics in Athens where both won gold for their respective countries of Czechoslovakia and the USA in sport shooting. They got together after Emmons, having taken the lead in his second event, cross-fired on his last shot and finished eighth. Katy consoled him for his loss, and his comment was that “things happen for a reason…maybe the reason was Katy”.
They married in 2007 and Katy has continued a successful career with two more Olympic medals, two World Championship medals and an impressive four more at the European Championships. They both live and train in Colorado.
Victoria Pendleton and Scott Gardner
The much-reported relationship that ripped team spirit asunder just as golden girl Pendleton won her gold medal for cycling in Beijing. It is an unwritten rule in professional sport that coaches and athletes do not get involved, for fear of what it might do to team cohesion. British cyclist Pendleton and her coach Gardner kept their relationship under wraps during the 2008 Games, but once revealed she says she felt disregarded by her team mates. Although the atmosphere has been tense, she and Scott have held it together and are engaged to be married after London 2012.
Darcy Marqardt and Richard Hortness
One of the most recent love stories of the Olympics, these two Canadians met in their last days in Beijing and hit it off straight away. On returning to very different lives; Darcy working in Vancouver and Richard finishing his final year of studies in Las Vegas, they assumed they might never see each other again. But persistent contact and eventually his moving to London, Ontario, where she was based in training for swimming at London 2012, led to romance. Hortness estimates he proposed about 100 times before she accepted, and they are heading to London to compete in pentathlon and swimming together before getting married next year.
