The background of the story
在1850年前后美国——也就是该书所描写那个时代，除了政治生活腐败，劳资矛盾加深，教会虚伪诡诈，人民不堪其苦之外，最迫切、最严重问题是蓄奴制和种族歧视，它在南部各州既普遍、又猖獗。作者对这一切不合理现象，表现出战斗态度，对受迫害广大黑人群众旗帜鲜明地给予热烈同情和支持。
