An economist describes his system of working and offers advice on work habits and a wide range of other topics. Economists should not give too much weight to the social importance of an issue, but should do what captures intellectual interest and creative imagination. It is also important to learn to manage time. The best and most alert period of the day should be reserved for real research, and the tired, dull or slack stretches should be used for correspondence, meetings, and administrative chores. When writing, it is important to keep it simple and short, and listen to referees. It is very important to maintain a youthful sense of freedom to choose problems and the directions of work on them.
