Credit Suisse, the firm formerly known as Credit Suisse First Boston orCSFB, is one of the world’s most renowned investment banks and a memberof Wall Street’s prestigious bulge bracket of securities firms. Adivision ofthe Zurich, Switzerland-based Credit Suisse Group, Credit Suisse offers a fullrange of investment banking, securities products and financial advisoryservices to corporations, governments and institutional investors,complementing the other divisions of Credit Suisse that provide privatebanking, asset management and alternative investments. Credit Suisse is anindustry leader in capital markets, leveraged finance, high yield, primebrokerage and M&A. In 2005, the bank was involved in 11 of the 20 biggestU.S. M&Adeals. In addition to the U.S., the bank also has strong positionsin Europe and Asia Pacific.

Credit Suisse rose to top-tier investment bank status thanks (largely) to twoacquisitions and a man named Frank. In 1988, the firm’s parent, CreditSuisse Group, purchased investment bank First Boston and renamed it CSFirst Boston. Soon after, the firm poached Internet banking superstar FrankQuattrone from Deutsche Bank. Quattrone helped CSFB leap to the top ofthe investment banking league tables for tech and Internet advisory in the late1990s. (Today, Quattrone is better known for his 2004 conviction ofobstruction of justice and subsequent deferred-prosecution agreement.) Evenso, the firm’s bulge bracket status didn’t come until later, with the acquisitionof Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette in November 2000. The $12.4 billionpurchase added DLJ’s debt underwriting prowess and established Wall Streetname to CSFB’s growing franchise.
