写在工作两周年纪念

【感恩篇】

感谢远在家乡的父母，一直以来的鼎力支持。妈妈自从2009年岁末注册开心网那天起，已经记录了900多篇开心日记。妈妈记录着每天平平淡淡的生活、母女之间的聊天记录、还有生活里偶尔喜悦的瞬间。感谢老公这些年不懈的努力，申请到了绿卡卡。感谢婆婆，默默的支持和祈祷，给我鼓劲加油。感谢明尼的许多恩师益友，帮助我度过一个接一个的难关。感谢现在身边的每一位朋友，给予我的温暖和关心。

【求职面试篇】

虽然在国内有过几年的工作经历，但是专业和行业完全转换了，所以我只能把自己当作freshgraduate看待。找工作还是花了不少功夫，包括：向往届的同学取经、搜集各种面试可能遇到的问题（technical+ behavior）、整理所有的courses和projects、准备一两份自己的writingsample、查看面试单位的基本信息、反复修改简历、准备几个向面试官提出的问题。每一轮面试结束，我整理所有被问到的问题，列了一个很长的FAQ，贴到MITBBS统计版了（http://www.mitbbs.com/article_t0/Statistics/31314653.html） 发出的简历大约100份à收到10个电话面试à4个onsiteà1个offer。成功率不高，但也算找到工作了，嘻嘻。接受offer之后，也陆续收到过几个onsite邀请，但都回绝了。毕业之前，实在忙的焦头烂额，找工作的事情暂告一段落。

【OPT和EAD篇】

这是最让国际学生头疼的东东。我在正式开始工作之前，等待了一个月才收到卡卡。幸运的是，在期末考试、答辩和搬家的层层重压下解脱出来之后，过了一个月闲云野鹤的生活，身心彻底放松，很是怀念。总之，毕业之前，多向国际学生办公室的advisor咨询，按照要求把事情一件一件办好，一切都会顺利的，只需要耐心等待。

【工作体会篇】

上学时学到的技能基本上可以用在工作中，偶尔也会遇到advanced一点的问题，需要做一些功课，可以跟同事讨论或向老板请教。工作的过程还是很愉快的，人际关系比较简单，工作任务也很清楚。每年两次evaluation，老板的评价都还不错。

我的工作主要是面对电脑和数据，有时候也会和investigator见面讨论。 从工作第一天开始，每天我都会坚持列一个to-do-list，按照事情的优先级，一件一件的去完成，两年下来已经记满了4个本本。现在回头翻一翻，会发现许多有意思的事情。电脑里的文件夹也越来越多，每接手一个新的case就会建一个新的folder，每一个folder都可以让我写出一个有趣的故事，和科学或医学有关。写程序和报告的部分，平时注意版本管理和复用，会给新接的活儿节省很多时间和精力。

在老板的支持下，我一直坚持在职上课。从入职到现在已经选过5门课，两个A+，三个A-。可惜去年年底申请pennphd被拒了，现在有点小迷茫…求学统计的姐妹们一起探讨今后的发展。另外，不知道老公的下一份工作会去哪儿，我的工作又将处于举棋不定中…

【移民绿卡篇】

老公说我是稀里糊涂的变”绿”的。事实上，好像的确如此，很惭愧。去年6月老公来看我，花了一周的时间，学习了很多别人准备的资料。他说在mitbbs上从不发言，那段时间问别人要材料，发了100多封站内信。之前他还向许多journal申请做review，花了不少功夫。去年7月底，我去Miami开会，老公又休假一周，那段时间，他最后整理了所有的材料。他的I-140在8月初一周内批准的，我们的485在8月底提交，之后等待了半年，收到了绿卡卡。

【牛郎织女篇】

和版上的一些MM一样，我和老公是从两年前开始两地生活的，许多美国朋友无法理解的生活方式。但是在认识的中国朋友里面，这样的情况还真的不在少数，异州甚至异国。可能对于外来移民，面对和承受这样的现实，并不奇怪。

这两年飞来飞去的经历就不多写了，只给姐妹们分享一个小故事吧。现在想起来，还会止不住的感动。老公帮我安顿下来之后，他陪了我两周，然后就离开了。可能水土不服的缘故，我又有点便秘。老公上飞机那天，我们煮了一些玉米和茶叶蛋。老公一根玉米也没吃，他说煮玉米，可以帮助我缓解症状。送完他，回来的时候，对着那些玉米，我大哭了一场。也许是老公平日被鸡毛蒜皮遮住的体贴现在才体会到、也许是身边忽然少了一个人的空落落，本来我以为可以很坚强面对一个人的生活，在那一刻却变得那么脆弱。

我 的一位高中同学在英国工作，老婆在北京，他很乐观的说：“现在又不是七老八十、生活不能自理，为了将来有更好的发展，暂时分开算不了什么的”。一位在明尼上学时认识的朋友，也曾和老公异地三年。离开明尼之前，她送给我一句温暖的话：“只要两个人心在一起，一切都会好起来的”。再就是一年前，房东介绍我认识了一个MM，呵呵，我俩的奇遇记貌似偶然，或许是特殊的生活轨迹让我们俩相见如故吧。和境遇相似的姐妹分担忧愁、分享快乐，是上天的赐福。所以，这两年我也一直相信，生活一定会越来越好的。愿天下的牛郎织女们早日团聚！

【面试问题总结】

总结一下面试被问到的一些问题。

General questions:

- Why are you interested in this position?

- Tell me something about yourself.

- Give me an example how you deal with challenging problems.

- Describe how you deal with multi tasks.

- Show us a writing example that you recently completed.

- What is your career goal in 5 years?

- How do you communicate with your collaborators?

- Have you ever worked on a project in a team? How did you do it?



Technical questions:



- How do you describe your SAS/R skills?

- Where did you learn SAS/R?

- What other programming languages did you use?

- Give me the information you need for a sample size calculation (for
continuous/binomial outcomes).

- Tell me the assumption of Cox regression.

  (non-informative censoring and proportional hazards)

- How to interpret Odds ratio? For example, the outcome is heart attack and
the covariate is treatment.

- Give me the correlation structure you know and their differences.

- Tell me all the SAS procedures you know.

- Could you tell me your favorite course? And why?

- Tell me all the courses you learned.

- If you need to compare the weight between two groups of patients, what
kind of statistical test would you use? (parametric and nonparametric)

- What kind of method would you use to test the association between gender
and disease? (both categorical)

- What method would you use to predict height by weight?

- Which test would you use for comparing survival outcomes?

- What method to estimate the survival function of life-time data?

- Which procedure would you use for summary statistics? (for continuous or
categorical data)

- How do you use ODS option?

- Do you have experience with SQL?

- What kind of statistical plots do you know? And how to generate them?

- Which data format do you encounter with? And how do you import them into
SAS?

- How do you interpret a significant interaction? For example, the outcome
is blood pressue, and the covariates are gender and age.

- Which methods do you use to evaluate or test the model assumptions?

- If each patient has multiple records, how do you choose the first and the
last record for each patient in SAS?



Project-related questions:



- What is the population prevalence of OM?

- What are the significant risk factors for OM in your final model? And how
to interpret them?

- Why is it a matched case-control study?

- Why are you using Kappa statistics for this study?

   (to compare the agreement between ear infection history and ear exam
results)

- Why did you choose Cox regression instead of log-rank test?

- How many babies had ear infection occurence at the end of the study?

- How do you define the time-to-event for this study?

- How many subjects are there in this study? What’s the ratio of case
versus control? And why?

- What software or method do you use in your meta-analysis?

- How do you calculate the mean and standard deviation for the pooled
analysis?

- Could you describe your plan B project?

- What’s the differences between the ward’s minimum variance method,
average linkage method and centroid linkage method?

- What is the most challenging aspect to work as a teaching assistant?



Questions to ask:



- Besides those technical qualifications, what personal qualities do you
most value? (below are the feedbacks I got from all my interviewers)
