'The term spatial econometrics was coined by Jean Paelinck in the early 1970s to designate a growing body of the regional science literature...In there book Spatial Econometrics, Paelinck and Klassen outline five characteristics of the field in terms of the types of issues considered:

---the role of spatial interdependence in spatial models

---the asymmetry in spatial relations

---the importance of explanatory factors located in other spaces

---differentiation between ex post and ex ante interaction

---explicit modeling of space'

I'm just a beginner in spatial economics, but what I want to say is that I wish one day i can freely exchange my idea with all of you.

Now I have some thoughts about this subject, but I lack good ways to express them.

To wAming

Thank you for your attention to this column. It is understandable for us to be beginners in this field for that spatial econometrics is also in its burgeoning stage. While it is a promising field, which provides us a new perspective to analyze the regional problems. Equipped with this tool, we can get a in-depth understanding on the very regional issues. Welcome everyone interested in this field to release your comments! Through the narrow aisle of pain, we can make progress together.

回复:(tryee)Spatial Econometrics

The piece of information I want to share:

1. James LeSage is the excellent fellow in the field of spatial economics. In an infinite cited website by him (http://www.spatial-econometrics.com/) James Lesage provides resourceful tools (codes, toolboxes) to perform spatial dependence analysis using Matlab. But again, you have to be familiar with Matlab.

2. Scott Merryman (http://econpapers.repec.org/software/bocbocode/s448405.htm) presented a county and state based contiguity weight matrix, of course, it will be easy to construct a contiguity based weight matrix for China. For distance-based spatial weight matrix it's harder 'coz we need know the latitude of longitude for the centroid of each province. At city level, I would imagine the construction of the weight matrix is gonna be harder. However, if you have the longitude and latitude data, you can use the geographical formula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great-circle_distance, this is the most commonly used formula academically) to calculate the distance between two places.

3. Once you have a spatial weight matrix in hand, you can follow the article by Anselin (http://psweb.sbs.ohio-state.edu/intranet/teaching/stb60.pdf) on page 21. He showed detailed procedures to perform spatial analysis using STATA (e.g. conducting the popular Spatial Error Model or Spatial Lag Model diagnosis and estimation). Those files and data in his example are uploaded by me in case you could not find it online. In STATA, type spatwmat and then install the whole package, and following the steps from page 21 in the PDF file. It’s easy to follow.

4. Timothy Conley also provided STATA GMM codes, dataset in his website (http://faculty.chicagogsb.edu/timothy.conley/research/gmmcode/statacode.html). But the construction of the weights is not based on spatial contiguity as used by Anselin and personally the instructions/procedures are hard to follow, which I found very reluctant to follow his steps. But there does have numerous articles borrowed his codes.
