The best thing about R is it's developed by statisticians, and the worst thing about R is it's developed by statisticians!
tbh, R is very handy in exploratory analysis, preliminary modeling and testing, and visualization and presentation, but if u really want to attack some real-world problems w/ massive complex datasets, R is probably not the best choice, though it could certainly contribute in any case.
