First of all, we were or are learning standard English rather than slangs or metaphors which native speakers frequently use in their daily life. Second, many ESL teachers in China are not really professional teachers, and so they are not necessarily right. Third, whether some English expressions make sense to them depends on where those native English speakers come from. People from England, Ireland, Australia, Canada, or the U.S.
all speak differently, more or less.
