Day-After-Christmas Sales Will Be Huge

Christmas isn’t even over but those thinking about the day after Christmas aren’t alone. These are expected to be bigger than ever and start earlier.
Dealnews.com predicts after Christmas sales will be better than expected. Post-holiday discounts on items the site calls an “Editor’s Choice” have been steadily increasing over the past few years, and this year should be no exception. Editor Louis Ramirez expects HDTVs and Christmas decor to offer the best deals.
But an even bigger trend will be the early start of after-Christmas sales. Just like Black Friday started the day before on Thanksgiving, after-Christmas sales won’t wait for their appointed day. Some have already begun.
Amazon is running “2013 After Christmas Sales” or year-end deals of up to 70% off, and Old Navy’s “ Mega Sale” offers 75% off in stores and 60% online and runs from now through Jan. 31.
Look for many retailers to begin after Christmas sales online once stores close on Christmas Eve. The best deals will likely be on apparel from now until January as retailers clear inventory of winter wear.
But don’t expect a fire sale on everything. As gift cards rise in popularity each year, retailers adjust inventory planning and generally get a boost immediately following Christmas as shoppers redeem those gift cards.
Sales of prerecorded media such as video games, movies and music (and their digitally downloaded versions) pop right after Christmas as shoppers look for content to play on their new devices.
So in some cases, the most dramatic discounts particularly in apparel and electronics won’t hit until the middle of January but the overall lackluster holiday season will see some pretty incredible discounts.
It’s great for consumers, less so for retailers. Just another sign of the times.
